A Search for Hope - 930 Words

Famous English poet and playwright William Shakespeare uses â€Å"hope† in King Richard III as â€Å"True hope is swift, and flies with swallows wings: Kings it makes gods, and meaner creatures kings† (Shakespeare). Shakespeare likens â€Å"hope† to wings that elevate people during its existence, a power which strengthens people. During my research different sources, from academic writings to visual sources, discussed how the result of an aim is affected by â€Å"hope†. The results that I gained from my research have shown that people can’t achieve their dreams in the lack of hope. Hope is the irreplaceable element of success. The dictionary gives a basic meaning of hope, but the explanation of the word is deficient. The Oxford dictionary, an online dictionary which is created by The Oxford University, defines hope as â€Å"to want something to happen and think that is possible†(Hope). The denotation by The Oxford dictionary vitiates the true meaning of the word â€Å"hope†. â€Å"To want something to happen† (Hope) can be the explanation of require/desire, however, simplifying hope like that would be ignoring the effects of hope which are beyond desiring. After the requirement, having hope for the aim would help in the process of achieving. Defining second part of hope as â€Å"to think something is possible† (Hope) would be insufficient because hope can make people believe and attach themselves to their aim even though in the situations which are called impossible.
